- Father’s Day is the most appropriate platform to make us look beyond ‘our own’ family and honor the man who brought us joy and happiness.
- Father’s Day is a day to honor not only your father, but all men who have acted as a father figure in your life – whether as Stepfathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, or “Big Brothers.”

Father’s Day in India
It is comparatively a new trend in India. Similar to western countries like USA and UK, Father’s Day celebration is slowly gaining ground in various Indian metropolises. Urban places in the country, where people are more receptive towards western culture, have recognized the sentiments attached with the day and have been celebrating it for not more than ten years now. The idea of honoring dads on this particular day has been appreciated by millions of Indians, who observe it on the third Sunday of June every year.
On this day, children pay tribute to their fathers and bestow them with gifts. They also express their warm greetings and love to people whom they consider as father figures. Though Father’s Day celebrations are more pronounced in urban centers of India, many people in smaller towns and remote areas are also slowly catching up with the concept. Due credits goes to the numerous advertising campaigns that voice the importance of this day through gifts and greeting cards, for increasing its awareness.
Like in the West, children in India also make it a point to indulge dad with various love tokens and gifts during the occasion. From flowers to expensive accessories, various Fathers Day gifts throng the Indian markets. Popular gifts include cards, bouquets, watches and wine bottles. The trend of presenting the conventional necktie to dads is also in style. Most Indian families generally prefer celebrating it by dining in restaurants or going out for a family picnic or a movie. Cultural shows are also organized in various schools and clubs to honor dads on this special day.
World class cricket stadium soon for Kochi
A world class cricket stadium, worth Rs 250 crore, is coming up in this coastal city on a 23 acres of land at Edakochi.
Best facilities of stadiums in Adelaide, Johannesburg and the ones in Hyderabad and Mohali in India will be incorporated init. It would be like a dream come true for all Keralites.
Sources said construction of the project would begin next year and was expected to be completed in three years.
Conception and design work would take six to nine months.
The 23 acres of land for the stadium has already been acquired by KCA . It is also planned to procure additional land near this area in future for the project.
Land adjacent to the stadium would have facilities for indoor games, swimming pools, water sports, an international level club house and a 10-metre shooting range, he said.
The KCA plans to finance the project from the funds that the BCCI gives to state association for new stadiums, its own funds and bank loans.
There are also plans to raise funds through club memberships for the public.
KCA has chalked out a 10 year ‘Mission 2020′ programme, with the main objective of getting Kerala into the Elite Group in Ranji trophy cricket and winning the trophy, besides developing the game in the state.
Other projects are ‘Cricket at Schools’ and ‘Cricket At Sports Hostels’ (CASH), both of which would involve physical education teachers of all the schools in the state, he said.
The CASH project would identify about 60 children from the seventh, eighth and ninth standards, accomodate them in hostels and meet their education and training expenses.
Only few students take interest in sports in Kerala, unlike in neigbouring Tamil Nadu. For under-16 trials, only about 200 students turn up in the state, while it is 2,000 in Tamil Nadu and this trend will be changed.
Lower your Blood Pressure
Losing weight is still a number one dietary way to bring blood pressure down. But after that, comes raising your potassium intake while cutting down on sodium, reports a new review of studies from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, USA.
Most of us, however, get only about half the potassium we need. To meet daily quota (about 4700 mg) , one should eat plenty of veggies, fruits, low-fat dairy, nuts, seeds and beans. Sound daunting?
This sample 1800 calorie plan shows how simple it can be.

Amitabh Bachchan celebrates 40 years in Bollywood this year
Amitabh Bachchan, considered as Bollywood’s biggest star, completes his four decades in the Hindi film industry this year.
To celebrate Bachchan’s forty years in Bollywood, a well-known company has planned a lavish party on October 11, the superstar’s birthday.
On the occasion, his super hit films would be screened again.
Bachchan, who began his career with a small role in Khwaja Ahmad Abbas-directed flick Saat Hindusthani released in 1969, shot to fame with his angry young man image beginning with Zanjeer.
The mega star’s career has seen many ups and downs, however, his ability to bounce back with brilliant performances and popularity across all domains has kept him going even at the age of 68 when all his peers have preferred to stay away from the celluloid.
Background
Amitabh Bachchan, the most popular Bollywood star, made his debut with Saat Hindusthani (1970) directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas.

However, it was Zanjeer (1973) that made Amitabh a household name and gave him the title of angry young man in Bollywood.

Since then it’s never looking back for the actor who ruled the industry in the 80s with several blockbusters.
Termed as ‘one man army’ by veteran Hindi film producer-director Manmohan Desai, Bachchan continues to entertain the new generation of audiences with variety of roles.
The 68-year-old actor has three National Awards to his credit — Saat Hindusthani in ‘Best Newcomer’ category, while for Agneepath (1990) and Black (2005) he won the trophies in ‘Best Actor’ category.
He has won four Filmfare Best Actor awards so far for Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Don (1978), Agneepath, Hum (1991) and Black.
In Best Supporting Actor category, he has bagged three awards for Anand (1971), Namak Haraam (1973) and Mohabbatein (2000).
Indian Govt. bans inport of phones without IMEI number
The Indian Government’s lengthy legal struggle with Chinese mobile handsets has finally come to a commendable conclusion. The government has now imposed a ban on the import of Chinese mobile phones. According to the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade, mobile handsets without an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number cannot be imported anymore.
- IMEI is a unique 15-digit handset number that is used for tracking its sale and helps mobile operators to identify valid handsets.
- This number can also be used to make phone useless (even without SIM) by mobile operators in case the device is stolen.
Earlier the Indian Department of Telecom had sent a directive to COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) requesting them to block access of mobile handsets sans IMEI number. Later, April 15 was declared as the deadline for barring IMEI-less Chinese handsets.
![]()
Being cheaper than other brands and also bearing multimedia plus touchscreen feature, Chinese mobiles obviously tend to attract consumers. About eight lakh unbranded Chinese phones come to India every month and till now, about 30 million of such IMEI-less or spoofed IMEI bearing phones are in usage.
The government has taken fair steps to maintain national security by barring the Chinese mobile import. But what about the 30 million IMEI-less Chinese mobile handsets that are in use? Apparently, the move from unbranded handsets to a branded one is going to cost the consumers a bit extra on what they’ve spent on Chinese handsets already.
Small time unbranded mobile phone retailers will still flourish and might even hike price of handsets. All eyes would now be on mobile operators regarding their strategy to deal with IMEI-less mobile handsets. A change for national security and harmony is always welcome.
