धन प्राप्ति योग

Posted by cls On December - 26 - 2010

Read the rest of this entry »

What exactly is a total solar eclipse?
It’s when the new moon gets between Earth and Sun, and covers the solar disc completely. This can happen only during a new moon, when the sun and
moon are in conjunction as witnessed from earth. Minimum two and maximum five solar eclipses can occur in a year.

Total Solar Eclipse

Is it a big deal?
A total solar eclipse is easily the most spectacular celestial event you can view from Earth. The astrologers and astronomers believe the total solar eclipse to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and this one being the longest solar eclipse is definitely going to be a reason of curiosity. An eerie darkness descends during totality, birds fall silent and stars peer out in day time.

What’s so cool about this one?
This one’s truly special. It’s the longest total eclipse this century and the longest seen in India since Aug 18, 1868. The next big total eclipse in the country takes place on Jun 3, 2114. Between then and now, there’s only 1 total eclipse, on March 20, 2034, and it would just be visible in J&K. The line of totality traverses a distance of over 3,000 km. So, more Indians will be in the path of totality than ever in history! With this triple eclipse, a series of seven triple eclipse is marked till 2028.

When can Total Solar Eclipse be viewed?
The solar eclipse in Kanpur will be visible at 95.38 per cent. It will start at 5.32 am and last up to 7.26 am and is likely to peak at 6.26 am. The solar eclipse will commence even before sunrise and so the rising Sun itself will be eclipsed.

The partial eclipse will be visible from all over India. The Total Solar Eclipse is visible in Patna, Bhopal, Indore, Gaya, Varanasi, Bhavnagar, Darjeeling, Gangtok, Sibsagar, Surat, Ujjain and Vadodara. The time is early morning from 05:30 AM to 07:30 in most regions.

Timings differ slightly.
The maximum duration of totality for the Pacific Ocean is 6.39 minutes, for China about six minutes. For Kanpur region, the duration would be more than two minutes.
The last total eclipses visible from India were in 1999, 1995 and 1980.

Supersitions:
There have been several popular superstitions attached with the eclipse and have been passed down the generations.

  1. Pregnant women are not supposed to do any work with a needle, knife or scissors (basically any sharp object) because of the risk of physical mutations in their baby.
  2. Pregnant women are advised not to go outside during the eclipse to avoid having a blind baby or one with a cleft lip.
  3. It is also suggested that food cooked before the eclipse should be thrown out afterward as it becomes impure.
  4. Another interesting story attached with the eclipse is that those who are holding a knife or axe or any other sharp instrument during the eclipse will cut themselves.
  5. Eating is generally not allowed during an eclipse for the same reasons of impurity.
  6. Sometimes, even bathing after a solar eclipse is recommended.
  7. People should not venture out during the eclipse.

Legends:

  1. The Demons Rahu and Ketu, according to Hindu mythology caused the solar eclipse by eating away the Sun, but the mighty lord Sun was saved by Lord Vishnu and so every time an eclipse occurs, it is Rahu who eats the Sun.
  2. Ancient Chinese eclipse records can be used to calculate the slowing of the earth’s rotation, due to the braking action of the moon.
  3. According to the Chinese, a dragon swallows the sun. It needs to be frightened away by beating of drums so that it stops eating the celestial bodies.

Sky-gazers may just miss the fun as parts of state from where the total solar eclipse could be seen on July 22 are likely to have cloudy conditions.

It is a natural phenomenon. The only matter of concern is that this is the monsoon period and the visibility of the sun, low on the horizon, just after sunrise, when the eclipse takes place, is doubtful from almost all Indian locations.

Unfortunately, the weathermen of agronomy department of CSA have predicted rainfall in the next couple of days and so the overcast skies on Wednesday is likely. “Cloudy conditions would prevail during the next four or five days as pro-rainfall systems like low pressure area are present in the city,” pointed Dr Anirudh Dubey, weather scientist of CSA. “Besides local conditions like moisture and temperature would have an impact,” he added.

DOs and DONTs

  1. Do not look at the Sun with naked eyes as during the transition period, it may burn the retina and one may lose eyesight.
  2. Do not use ordinary dark glasses to see the Sun; UV glasses are appropriate to watch the eclipse, as they have the ability to reduce intensity.
  3. The safest method is to project the Sun’s image on a wall with a pinhole camera and look at it.
    • Find or make a long box or tube.
    • Cut a hole in the centre of one end of the box.
    • Tape a piece of foil over the hole.
    • Poke a small hole in the foil with a pin.
    • Cut a viewing hole in the side of the box.
    • Put a piece of white paper inside the end of the box near the viewing portal.
    • Point the end of the box with the pinhole at the sun so that you see a round image on the paper at the other end. If you are having trouble pointing, look at the shadow of the box on the ground. The round spot of light you see on the paper is a pinhole image of the sun. Do not look through the pinhole at the sun! Look only at the image on the paper.

If you have some shady trees in your location, try looking at the images of the sun coming through the holes formed by the leaves. A piece of white posterboard is all you may need to have a great viewing session!

What is Astrology ?

Posted by cls On July - 14 - 2009

Astrology is the study of correlations of celestial events with behavior on earth, particularly correlations which cannot be explained by gravitation, magnetism, or other forces that are well-established in physics or other sciences.

A “celestial event” is any event in the sky. For example,

  1. the Sun rising is a celestial event, or
  2. any two planets appearing in the same place in the sky is a celestial event.

The celestial event can involve any celestial body, whether it be the Sun, Moon, a planet, an asteroid, comet, star, black hole, quasar, or other celestial object.

The celestial event may also not involve any physical body at all, such as when, for example, the Moon’s North Node (as we shall find out later, the Moon’s North Node is not a physical object) is on the eastern horizon. The eastern horizon is, of course, simply where the sky meets the horizon of the earth in the easterly direction, and therefore is also not a physical body like a planet or star.

Some people mention that the Moon’s position affects the tides of the ocean, as an example of an astrological influence, but the correlation of ocean tides with the Moon’s position can be explained by gravitation so it is not really astrological in that the rules used by astrologers generally cannot be explained by gravitation or other forces known in the sciences.

Astrology has been used by virtually every advanced civilization for thousands of years, but it has almost always been very controversial as well. Today, skepticism about astrology is as strong as ever, and there are many good reasons for this. Astrology has its roots in ancient times when less scientific methods were employed and superstition was rampant in many of these civilizations. The only exposure that many people have had to astrology is the sun sign columns in the newspaper or a glamorous psychic astrologer on television. Thus, it is hardly surprising that astrology is generally not accepted as a legitimate and valid field of inquiry by academia. Resistance to astrology in academia is strong. The Kepler program and other fine work being done in the field of astrology today will hopefully open the eyes of many people to a valuable tool that is being overlooked.

Some people confuse astrology with astronomy. Astronomy is the science that studies celestial phenomena physically. All objects in the sky are studied in terms of their constitution, position, history, etc. Astronomy, of course, is a science and no one disputes its validity. Astrology goes a step beyond astronomy by making correlations of celestial phenomena with events on earth, and these correlations are not of a nature that can be easily explained by traditional scientific concepts. Astrology is highly controversial, and the fact that astrology is still not well-received in most academic circles.

Note that no one has proven how astrology works. There are many different views on how or why astrology might work, but there is not single conclusive answer that has been demonstrated to the satisfaction of all astrologers. Astrology is the study of the correlation between celestial phenomena and behavior on earth but why should this correlation exist? There are many possible answers . Note that the lack of a clear explanation of why the correlation should exist, or the fact that the existence of such a correlation seems absurd to many scientists and non-scientists alike, does not in itself make astrology unscientific. Scientists can analyze correlations and perfect their ability to predict based on these correlations without knowing why the correlation exists. Experts in scientific methodology emphasize that science ultimately is about making observations and theories help us understand the observations. The ability to predict that an apple will fall to the ground if dropped is a scientifically verifiable statement and it does not require the theory of gravitation to make it more scientific. However, the theory of gravitation allows us to understand not only why the apple falls to the ground, but also a myriad other phenomena such as why planets revolve around the Sun and the Moon revolves around the Earth. The power of a scientific theory is that it expands our ability to make predictions about other phenomena, but the lack of good theories does not make a replicable experiment less scientific.

Astrology has always been a fascinating topic for the general public and almanac readers. The thirst to know about the future is never ending. Astrology readings are a rage today.

There are three main traditions of astrology,

  • Western,
  • Indian and
  • Chinese.

All the three traditions share the same fundamental idea of a twelve sign zodiac with the signs divided into four basic types. It is possible to match up the twelve signs across the traditions. A basic similarity is seen in their characteristics. The following table shows the twelve signs and their sub-division into four categories as they correspond across the three traditions:

Lulin to be closest to Earth on Feb 24, 2009

Posted by cls On February - 25 - 2009

Scientists and star-gazers are hoping for a glimpse of a green comet called Lulin had their best chance on Wednesday as it reached its nearest point to the Earth. There would be another opportunity to see it on Thursday also
This unusual celestial body, which is about 300,000 miles wide and some 38 million miles away, was due to appear just after midnight, close to Saturn during its first visit to the Earth’s inner solar system.

However, Jenny Carter, who is part of a team of experts from the University of Leicester using Nasa’s Swift satellite to track the comet as it nears Earth, said their observations had been “disappointing” because of cloudy weather.

It is said that it should be quite bright, but as the days pass it will get fainter and fainter.
If there is a clearer sky tomorrow, one can see it from a place without much light pollution and with a pair of binoculars and a small telescope if one has it.

Discovered only a year ago, the comet gets its green colour from a poisonous, cyanide-like gas in its atmosphere.

The Swift satellite has recorded simultaneous ultraviolet and X-ray images of the comet.

Miss Carter said it was important to carry out

Observations of Lulin will give scientists clues about the origin of comets and the solar system.

A comet is a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust. These “dirty snowballs” cast off gas and dust whenever they venture near the sun.

Vedic Zodiacal Signs

Posted by cls On January - 4 - 2009

This table shows the signs with their rulers, Sanskrit names and symbols. The signs are the same as used in Western astrology. The nature of the signs, what they do, and the demigods behind them, who control them, are different in Vedic astrology.

Vedic astrology differs from Western or Tropical astrology in that it uses the fixed zodiac as opposed to the moving zodiac. Most people’s “Sun Sign”, that get from the newspaper each day, is usually one sign back when the chart is refigured using Vedic astrology. So, the surprise using the Vedic system is that you are no longer the Sun Sign you always thought you were. Therefore, if you were born in the last 5 days or so of the Western sign month, then you will probably still be the same sign in the Vedic system.

Zodiac Signs Symbols Hindi & English Names

Posted by cls On January - 3 - 2009

Most of us are familiar with Zodiac signs. These are based on your date of birth.  In fact, every newspaper always has a column where an astrologer gives out a daily prediction based on your sun sign. You may even be getting an e-mail or two from some websites with some similar information.

If you  look at the newspaper carefully, you will see a little symbol or a drawing right next to your sign. These are called zodiac symbols. These symbols, more or less, help us define the basic characteristics of each sun sign.

Look at the 12 sings of the zodiac and their respective zodiac symbols for more insight and understanding of the basic nature and impulses of each zodiac sign.
