होली परस्पर सौहार्द, भाईचारे और मेल-मिलाप का मस्ती-भरा त्यौहार है। हर वर्ष होली के अवसर पर लोग प्रेम, त्याग और आपसी मोहब्बत का इजहार करते हुए एक दूसरे को अबीर-गुलाल लगाते हैं, रंग-बिरंगे रंगों से एक-दूसरे को सरोबार कर देते हैं। दरअसल होली और रंगों को अलग करके नहीं देखा जा सकता। रंग, गुलाल, अबीर के बिना होली की कल्पना ही अधूरी लगती है। लेकिन गलत रंगों का प्रयोग कितनी हानि पहुंचा सकता है, इसकी कल्पना सहज ही की जा सकती है। आज जब कभी अपने मित्र रवि को देखता हूं तो मुझे उसके चेहरे के काले धब्बों में होली के हानिकारक रंगों की प्रतिछाया नजर आती है। आज से दो साल पूर्व होली के दिन की बात है रवि अपने दोस्तों के साथ पूरे जोश और उत्साह से होली खेल रहा था कि अचानक रवि चीख पड़ा। Read the rest of this entry »

Navratri, meaning ‘nine nights’, is an ancient and colourful festival. It honours the one Divine Shakti or Force which supports the entire universe, and is personified as the Mother Goddess. She protects her worshippers, destroys evil and grants boons to her children. The Mother Goddess has seven well – known forms, depending upon the special powers she manifests. Throughout Gujarat, Navratri is celebrated with joy and religious favour. The Devi Mahatmya and other texts invoking the Goddess who vanquished demons are cited.

Janmashtami 2009: A festival of devotion (14 Aug 09)

Krishna Janmashtami, the festival celebrating the birth of Shri Krishna, is known by various names such as Shri Krishna Jayanti, Janmashtami and Gokulashtami. This is an important festival in the Hindu calendar. Krishna Janmashtami festival is observed on the eighth day, Ashtami tithi, of the dark half in the month of Bhadrapad (mid August – mid September); on the eighth day of Rohini nakshatra (star).

Singing bhajans like Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki, Madan Gopal ki, devotees offer prayers to Lord Krishna. They also chant mantras of Lord Krishna. They decorate cradles for the Lord Krishna. Devotees can swing the idol of Krishna placed on a decorated cradle. Devotees observe fast for the entire day and it is broken after the birth of the Lord at midnight. Only milk and milk products are preferred by them, as these were the favorites of Lord Krishna.

Sri Krishna Janmashtami is known by various names such as Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Saatam Aatham, Ashtami Rohini, Sri Krishna Jayanti and Sree Jayanthi. Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated for two days. The first day is known as Krishnashtami and the second day is known as Kalashtami.

According to traditions, Lord Krishna was born to demolish Kansa, the demon king of Mathura. Lord Krishna played an important role in Hindu epic Mahabharata (legendary battle in Kurukshetra) and also emphasized the theory of bhakti.

On this auspicious day, devotees recite slogans and mantras of Lord Krishna. Another important custom of Sri Krishna Jayanti is singing of Hindu Bhajans (devotional songs) during the Janmashtami festival. People involve in dance performances that portray the life of Lord Krishna.

To commemorate the birth anniversary of the Lord, Rasa Lila or the dramatic performances of the life of Krishna are performed by devotees. Butter, buttermilk and sweets are offered to the Lord on the day. On the Ashtami Rohini festival occasion Lord Krishna Temples are brilliantly decorated with oil lamps and festival celebration continues till early hours of morning. Thousands of devotees visit the temples on Krishna Janmashtami day to get a glimpse of their favorite God in full decoration. Special feasts will be arranged by temple authorities on Krishnashtami day for devotees.
