कश्मीर घाटी में लोगों की ट्रेन देखने की हसरत 11 अक्टूबर 2008 को पूरी हुई। कश्मीर में प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने घाटी की ऐतिहासिक पहली रेल सेवा का उद्घाटन किया।

यह परियोजना 2009 के अंत तक पूरी होने की उम्मीद है। तब यह कश्मीर के उत्तरी हिस्से में बारामूला को दक्षिण स्थित काजीगुंड तक जोडे़गी। यह फासला 117 किलोमीटर का है। इस परियोजना पर करीब 20 अरब रूपए खर्च होने का अनुमान है ।

यह ट्रेन शुरु होने से काजीगुंड से श्रीनगर तक तीन घंटे का सफर अब मात्र 45 मिनट में पूरा होगा। इससे यहां के गंभीर मरीजों, छात्रों तथा उघमियों को विशेष लाभ मिलेगा।

सफर को सुहाना बनाने के मकसद से ट्रेन की खिड़कियों की साइज को बड़ा बनाया गया है, जिससे यात्री सफर का लुत्फ ले सकें।
