The fact is, desi stories, with real characters, can never go out of fashion. In fact, a number of present-day film-makers often tell me that they look upon, besides other reputed names, Hrishikesh Mukherjee as aninspiration. On one hand you had Amitabh Bachchan, the reigning superstar of 1970s and 1980s, doing a SHOLAY and an AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY and on the other hand, doing a BEMISAAL and a CHUPKE CHUPKE for Hrishi-da.

Debutante director Rahul Aggarwal also, very respectfully, credits his inspiration to Hrishi-da and his first outing NA GHAR KE NA GHAAT KE mirrors the fact at several points of the narrative. The protagonist in the film is like any other non-descript person you set your eyes on the street, who is as helpless as you and me in a life-changing situation.

A film like NA GHAR KE NA GHAAT KE ought to have a simple, uncomplicated plotline and actors who can pull off these roles without ‘acting’ those parts. While the writing is interesting at times and wobbly at places [the climax is weak], the set of actors are more or less believable.

Final word? NA GHAR KE NA GHAAT KE may not be that small little gem that sparkles brightly even in the dark, but it’s an earnest effort from a first-time storyteller [Rahul Aggarwal] nonetheless.

Devki Nandan Tripathi [Rahul Aggarwal] is a simple, rustic man who decides to try his luck in the city of dreams, Mumbai. He gets a job at the Mausam Vibhaag. In the city, he comes across an array of people who often find his innocence amusing and comical, but Devki realises that they stick with him even in the thickest of bogs that his life hauls him in.

The very first sequence of NA GHAR KE NA GHAAT KE sets the mood of the film and you instantly get drawn into the world of Devki Nandan Tripathi. While major portions of the first hour are plain ordinary, it’s the second half that catches your eye. The sequences between Paresh and Rahul are the mainstay of the film and the subsequent arrival of the villagers to prove that Rahul and Narayani are indeed married brings a big smile on your face.

But the smile transforms into a frown as the film nears its climax. The chase and the subsequent marriage in the police station premises appears filmi and a complete compromise from the writing point of view. A better culmination to the story would’ve only enhanced the impact.

Debutante director Rahul Aggarwal knows the grammar of film-making right, but a little more emphasis on the screenplay would’ve helped enormously. Lalit Pandit’s music is strictly okay. K. Rajkumar’s cinematography is alright.

Rahul Aggarwal enacts the pivotal part with conviction. Narayani Shastri does a decent job. Both Paresh Rawal and Om Puri are first-rate. Neena Gupta is wasted. Ravi Kishan carries off the loud character very well. Ananth Mahadevan is alright.

On the whole, NA GHAR KE NA GHAAT KE is a simple film told in the most simplistic manner. Should appeal mainly to those who cherish the Hrishikesh Mukherjee movies of yore.

Atithi (meaning) guest is always an unwelcome specie, especially when they come to stay overnight and the stay then goes into weeks and months. This movie is about one such Atithi. However, since, a guest is like God, we have to treat them right, right? That’s the Indian hospitality. And it is this very hospitality that the comedy is based upon.

Ajay Devgan and Konkona Sen Sharma are happily married to each other with a six-year-old son, when an unwelcome, unannounced guest, who on arrival in the building lobby itself sets up a commotion by slapping the watchman, rocks their world. Guest (Paresh Rawal) is asking for Pappu. He has a flat No., which matches with where Ajay resides. So Ajay who is Puneet in the film becomes Pappu. Rawal enters their home and makes it his own. Farts to his liking, dries his langot in all corners of the house, harasses the maid, and invites his friends over. So much so that the couple have to move out for a few days into a hotel to get some respite.

Atithi Dev Bhav to Atithi Bhag

Rawal annoys so much that you feel for the couple and along with them want to kick him out of their house. But there are a few laughs left and Rawal is not yet done with his unintentional humour, which now has endeared him to all the society members.

It’s a Paresh Rawal show all the way with Ajay and Konkona providing good support. Rawal meeting Sholay’s Kaalia (Viju Khote) on the sets is one hilarious track ‘Kitney aadmi the,’ he keeps asking kaalia, on the Muhurat of the set. His reply causes and out-of-turn explosion blowing a Rs 50 Lakh set before the Muhurat shot!

India is a country that has glorious tradition of welcoming the guests and the illustriousness of tradition goes back to the times of Mahabharata and Ramayana. But in the modern times where the spiraling prices, and the pigeonholed existences have become more of a norm, any guest who tries to pile on, becomes a bone in the neck that can neither be spewed out nor swallowed. ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE, as the title suggests, though underlines the importance of guests in our lives, and is also fed up with their attitude of piling on, as they become enamored of the splurges of modern day existence in the metropolitan cities.

While Ajay Devgun is trying to test waters with his comic prowess one again after not so successful attempt in ALL THE BEST, for Konkona Sen Sharma, and Paresh Rawal, enacting comedy of urban genre is a turf which has become a home ground for them. ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? is the second film in the current year in which a major Hollywood studio is associating itself, the studio being Warner Brothers. First film during the year was MY NAME IS KHAN and it was co-produced by 20th Century Fox Films.

One does not know whether it is an Anurag Kashyap effect or what but suddenly Gorakhpur; one of the forlorn towns in Eastern UP has become a city of reference in Hindi films. Earlier reference to Gorakhpur was in ISHQIYA and now it has come back again in ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE?. As Warner Brothers is venturing into film making in a big way in Hindi films, they devised innovative way of curtain raiser for the film. The trailer of the film were released in a high definition video format on the Apple website and it built up quite a lot of anticipation for the film within one month of launch of this initiative on the Apple site. ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? is more of a situational comedy, which seeks to position itself in the genre of comedies made in the 70s by the likes of Hrishikesh Mukerjee, Basu Bhattacharya, etc., situational comedies with which common man used to identify in a dear manner. Would ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? be able to draw the patrons into the cinema halls by harking back to the era when film viewing was sheer fun and a family outing. 5th March would announce the verdict. The chart topping track from OMKARA, Beedi jalai le is converted into a bhajan, sung by Rawal, which has the society members in a trance. And though the couple want to see the back of their guest who has overstayed his time, when the time comes for him to leave, they actually want him to stay!

It is film for movie lovers and they should not miss it. Farhan Akhtar along with Ritesh Sidhwani have proved that Bollywood has the potential of making movies above the normal the regular masala movies. Karthik Calling Karthik does not give out a very loud impression , but believe that you will change your mind while you are watching the movie because the movie has so much to offer you than what you have seen in the promos. Actually none of the promos give us a hint that this movie is a psychological thriller with an absolutely mind-boggling suspense that will force you to think harder subconsciously.

The plot is very simple where our main protagonist, Karthik (Farhan Akhtar) is a very shy and reserved guy who reminds me of Amol Palekar in Chhoti Si Baat. He is a complete loser with shattered self-confidence. He finds himself trapped between daily life challenges and a job. His boss and colleagues never treat him equally qualified, though he has a good educational background.

Shonali Mukherjee (Deepika Padukone) is exactly the opposite of Karthik. She is an extrovert who loves to enjoy life as it comes. Karthik is attracted towards Shonali because of her free nature but he is unable to express his feelings. Karthik takes help of a psychiatrist Mrs. Kapadia (Shefali Shah). He tells her that in his childhood his elder brother would always bully him and once his elder brother tried to play a prank on him by pushing him into a well, but accidentally his elder brother slipped and died in the well and from very that moment he feels guilty that it was his mistake that his brother died.

However, this consultation doesn’t help him much and Karthik feels that he is unable to take the pressure and decides to commit a suicide by consuming sleeping pills, but just when he is about to do that, he receives a call. He picks up the call and finds that the person on the other side is him, Karthik. The other Karthik calms him down and encourages him to be confident and guides him on how to tackle office pressure and attract Shonali towards him. The real Karthik follows his commands obediently and things begin to turn upside down. He gets a promotion at work and Shonali falls in love with Karthik. However, the voice on the phone instructs him to keep their conversations secret because people will not understand the logic, but Karthik shares this information with Shonali and Mrs. Kapadia and things begin to turn upside down again for Karthik. What follows next is a gripping truth that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

If you look for latka-jhatka entertainment than please don’t go for this movie, but if you like to watch a brilliant script executed superbly than Karthik Calling Karthik will definitely keep you occupied. The story looks very slow at times but this is only because of the nature of Karthik. Remember how Dil Chahta Hai slowed down everytime Akshay Khanna came up on the screen?  Many movie critics have given Karthik Calling Karthik a poor rating.

Like Luck By Chance and Rock On, Farhan Akhtar once again proves that he has the ability to take the load of the entire movie. Of course, Deepika does give out a good performance this time, but you cannot imagine Karthik Calling Karthik without Farhan. Ram Kapoor as a typical nagging boss does a brilliant job and Vipin Sharma as Ashish does a decent job as well. Shefali Shah does her role of psychiatrist brilliantly.

Vijay Lalwani has done a fantastic job on direction, screenplay, story and dialogues.

Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is good and different. However, what works for this movie is an incredibly awesome background score by Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale. Some of the scenes in the movie look gripping only because of the background score and witty dialogues.

Javed Akhtar provides good lyrics to the songs which help the flow of the movie.
